We are pleased to announce an upcoming seminar to take place here in Sheffield entitled ‘Forced Labour, Trafficking, and Slavery: The Political Economy of Exploitation and Protection in the 21st Century’.

The seminar is jointly hosted by SPERI, The University of Sheffield Department of Politics and Faculty of Social Sciences Migration Research Group, and the British International Studies Association International Political Economy Group (BISA-IPEG).

Professor Tony Payne, Director of SPERI, will be introducing the event. The panelists will be Professor Julia O’Connell Davidson (University of Nottingham), Dr. Neil Howard (European University Institute), Mr. Jean-Marie Kagabo (International Labour Organization) and Professor Nicola Phillips (University of Sheffield)

Over the past fifteen years, forced labour, trafficking, and slavery have become issues of major political and media concern.  Governments are beginning to act, with countries including the US, Canada, and Brazil having recently launched national strategies to tackle human trafficking and modern slavery. The UK’s draft Modern Slavery Bill is currently before Parliament.  Yet, such initiatives do little to address the political economic drivers of these forms of exploitation, nor do they offer adequate protection.

This seminar will bring together academics, policy-makers, and civil society figures to discuss and debate the political economy of exploitation and protection in the 21st Century, including the role of governments, business, and international organizations.

The event will take place on 12 May 2014, 2-4pm in The Arts Tower Boardroom, The University of Sheffield. This is a free event and all are welcome, but space is limited, please register here.
